Animation!
466K

Date: 5/16/04
Equipment: Orion 80ED refractor.
Losmandy G11 Gemini mount.
SBIG ST-4 autoguider
Celestron guidescope
Exposure: 5 individual shots.  Each was 15 minutes on hypered tech pan with the exception of the fourth shot which was cut short at 10 minutes due to a guiding problem. Guiding was done on the head of the comet.
Processing: Each image was scanned with the scanner settings locked for consistency.  Images were manually aligned and registered in Photoshop. Curves adjusted in Photoshop. Animation was created using Adobe ImageReady.
Notes: Shot the first night of the Texas Star Party 2004.
Because of the shorter exposure for the fourth image and an additional slight delay in shooting the fifth exposure, the animation is not as smooth as I had hoped.  Still pretty cool though.

Notes: Guiding was done on the head of the comet.  This technique causes the stars to trail, but shows much more detail in the comet tail.  The ST-4 did an excellent job tracking the nucleus of the comet.
